Compatible / Remanufactured Cartridges
These cartridges are usually the best combination of value and quality for general printing. Quality is generally the same as or very similar to the more expensive manufacturers cartridges for both documents and photographs. Where manufacturers do not allow copies of their crtridges to be made you can usually purchase remanufactured cartridges - official cartridges which have been professionally refilled and repackages. They generally have similar properties to compatible cartridges, though they are sometimes a little higher in price.

Genuine / OEM Cartridges
While compatible ink cartridges are the best value and deliver good quality prints, if you intend your documents to be on display for long periods of time (for example a photo in a frame on your wall for several years) then the fade-free properties of OEM ink are very desirable.

Refill kits
Refilling your ink cartridges is the cheapest way to produce prints, but the results can vary. Refilling a cartridge usually involves using a syringe or pin drill (often a screw) to put ink back into the cartridge. It is worth experimenting with refilling due to the savings involved but generally it is not recomended for photo printing - the best results are experienced when outputting lots of text and simple graphics. Most cartridges can only be refilled a few times at most.

Warranties
It is a common myth that using a compatible cartridge can invalidate your printer warranty. This is just not true. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Improvement act states that no manufacturer can invalidate the warranty of your printer just by using a compatible cartridge. So as long as you do not tamper with the mechanics of your printer you are safe to use third party cartridges and enjoy the savings!

Odd results?
Remember that some printers are rebranded models from other manufacturers - for example Lexmark make a lot of samsung and Kodak printers, so your search may yield a different manufacturer. In most cases you can check the product description to check compatibility.
